Ace Marlow Playing Cards

The world-famous pub that is the Hand & Flowers. The only pub to have not one but two Michelin stars.

Now this isn't a pub you pop to for a quick pint and bag of pork scratchings. You have to book sometimes months in advance and it's all about savouring the experience.

Tom Kerridge and his wife Beth bought the pub in 2005 and folk really do make a detour to come here for it's warm welcome and award-winning food.

There's fifteen stunning rooms, so you can reserve one if don't fancy a taxi ride home.

The Marlow Round Table really are at the heart of the town, always raising money to support worthy causes and make it an even better place to live.

Of course, they're a very deserving heart card and they wanted to be a 2 because of their annual duck race that's a popular event at their much-anticipated May Fayre that takes place the first bank holiday weekend of that month in Higginson Park.

For Children In Need, Pudsey Bear can be seen on Marlow Bridge hoping for your donations to cross over the Thames too. 

Brvtvs does the best pizzas in Marlow. It's one of those places that feels effortlessly cool but you can see how much work has gone into it to make it the relaxed place it is. 

The menu is a very authentically Italian as are the team there.

Luca, the owner, loves to jump on the DJ decks and treat diners to his vinyl collection ranging from funk and soul, to disco grooves.

The annual Marlow Town Regatta and Festival is a key date for any local. It takes place on the third Saturday of June and is an ideal warm-up for those rowing in Henley Royal Regatta which takes place towards the end of June.

Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment for this quintessentially English day enjoying the river, plenty of rowing and a glass of fizz or two in the Jim Campbell Enclosure. 

Seasoned Regatta go-ers often bring their own picnic too and on Sunday the festival vibe includes live music and plenty of local goods on sale too.

Like Henley, they're a strict dress code for this Regatta too so make sure you read up on it if it's your first time.

This bijou museum is run entirely by volunteers and packed to the rafters with interesting artefacts eluding to Marlow's rich history including the now redundant Marlow Stocks, thank goodness.

It's free entry (though donations are always welcome) so the perfect place to take the family on a rainy day to find out what the Marlow Donkey is and some of the town's famous residents who once lived here.

They're currently fundraising to find a new and slightly larger home so donations are welcome.

The Jam Theatre has been entertaining Marlow since 2005. They love nothing more than putting on a  show and the best part is everyone is welcome to take part no matter what your age.

They hold regular classes too for children to get them treading the boards at an early age.

Jo Carter and Mark Hartley are the creative energy being the Jam Theatre.  Both have worked in the music and theatre industries professionally so you can feel at ease with their vast experience and expertise.

Germaine travels to France and Italy to bring the women of Marlow the best for their wardrobe. There's a great range of items you can wear every day or something with a little more glitz and glamour for the weekend.

Greg started the Mixing Jug back in 2014 with a travelling trailer going to many a festival with his marvellous freshly made smoothies.

In 2022, he put down roots in Liston Court, Marlow and has been refreshing and juice-boosting the town ever since. Check out their website for the full range of hot drinks and light bites they also offer.

What's even better is the 9 of hearts smoothie they now have on their menu in honour of the Marlow playing cards. Made with 9 ingredients (of course!) including strawberries, banana, red and black currants, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and oat mylk this super tasty is just what your morning needs.

Liston Hall is a place that all towns need to really bring the community together. It's  a decent-sized space right in the heart of Marlow with a very conveniently located car park right next to it.

It has three rooms so there's bound to be one that suits your party, meeting, class, launch, promotion or sale.

It's run by the Marlow Community Association, a registered charity for the good of the town.

It's a popular place to hire so make sure you book in plenty of time.

The second restaurant in Marlow from the world-famous Michelin-starred chef Atul Kocchar after the much-loved Sindhu at the Compleat Angler.

This stylishly chic dining experience offers a showcase of beautifully-presented Indian cuisine in a cool, contemporary surroundings. It's a real treat for the eyes as much as it is the taste buds.

Atul is a much-loved figure around Marlow, spending a lot of time here so you'll often see him out and about.

You'll be hard-pressed to leave Twenty Three Living without buying something. There's so many pretty things on offer from clothes to candles, jewellery to beauty and trinkets for your home and garden. 

It goes without saying it's the best place for gifts but also a very easy place to find at least one treat for yourself too. They even offer free gift-wrapping to make life just that little bit easier too.

Louise is a qualified aromatherapist and born and bred here in Marlow so an obvious choice for Marlow's queen of hearts card. 

There's no prizes for guessing what the Marlow Cheese Company offer. Yes, a plethora of award-winning locally-made cheeses.

Dad, James and daughter Chloe are qualified artisan cheesemakers and the magic happens over in Medmenham, just outside Marlow, on the way to Henley.

Their milk comes from Lacey's Farm, just 7 miles away in Lane End. It's very much local milk for local cheese. 

Keep an eye out for their cheese in various shops in and around Marlow and they'll often be found at the local artisan markets too.

A carnivore's heaven for those who love their beef. Choose your own steak from the counter and the chefs will butcher your meat in front of you. Order your sides and drinks then take a seat and everything will be bought to your table.

It's a cosy pub and easy to see why it's number 57 in the Top 100 Gastropubs. You can also watch the match and enjoy a burger or snack from the menu too.

It's Tom Kerridge's one of four restaurants in the pack so be sure to check out the other aces. The Butcher's Tap is expanding to Chelsea too but they don't have their own playing cards just yet.

This card is highly appropriate for the new pair of gems on the Marlow block: chefs Jack Blumenthal (Heston's som) & Leigh Jones.

In August 2023 they were awarded 1st place in the 'Wild Wing' People's Choice Award in London and Manchester at the World's Largest Chicken Wings Festivals so hence the rosette on their card.

They also came runner up in the ‘Buffalo Wing’ People’s Choice Award and took 
3rd place in the ‘Buffalo Wing’ Judges Choice Award but they don't like to go on about their awards.

Head down to the Crafty Taproom to see why everyone is talking about their delicious chicken wings, best enjoyed with a pint or two of freshly poured beer from the bar.

Jane has been spreading the joy of fitness and dance across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire for over thirty years!

This card does what it says on the tin. There's a wide variety of classes including jazz heels, street moves, ballet, pilates, yoga and much more. All are welcome of any age and ability including children and adult.

The Marlow locals love pitching up at the Crafty Taproom for a pint of two and you'll often see folk spilling out onto the pavement at busy times which just adds to the atmosphere.

Celebrating its 4th birthday in 2023 (and hence why they wanted to be a number four card in the pack) they pride themselves on an ever-changing range of draught beer sourced locally.

They also have canned and bottled beers chilling in the fridge as well as locally sourced spirits including Marlow gin.

Keep an eye out for the live music events too which are always popular. The Ginger Wings award-winning chicken wings are the perfect accompaniment for a few pints too.

What's better for the soul than a walk in the fresh air to enjoy nature at its best? This nature reserve is open to all and is 35 acres of woodland that's suitable for all ages.

There's a free orienteering map thanks to the Chiltern's Society which you can enjoy at your own pace. There's no prize at the end, just the warm feeling of pride and accomplishment.

It's always a big calendar event in Marlow and there's always a familiar face who has the honour of turning the town's festive lights on.

The event takes place on the Thursday before the final Friday in November. Roads are closed as the streets fill with revellers, and festivities are brought in including a big red bus commandeered by Marlow FM belting out the Yuletide classics.

The Christmas lights really do look stunning if you visit the town any time after that and are guaranteed to put anyone in a festive mood. With a good mix of independent retailers and well-respected chains in the town, it's a brilliant place to get your Christmas shopping done too.

Originally located on Marlow High Street which was a fishmongers' area for over a hundred years. This famous family-run fishmonger and butcher now resides in Little Marlow, a mere stone's throw from the town centre.

There's always a bountiful selection of freshly caught fish, locally sourced meat and if you're having a party, you can even order a hog roast with perfect crispy crackling.

Christmas is always a busy time so get your order in early for your turkey, beef or even lobster if that's on your festive menu. The team there are super friendly and you won't be disappointed.

A new edition to Marlow's HIgh Street but their faces should be familiar to those who've resided in the town for a while.

Bradley and Tracey moved to Marlow in 1995 and after a short spell in Devon decided they missed Marlow too much and moved back to open an art gallery with their daughter Anna in Autumn 2023.

Tracey is a highly regarded artist herself and her work is always on display as well as a wide range of local talent too.

Life for Fullard Fine Jewellery began in 1998 when Siân opened her first store in nearby High Wycombe. The Marlow store opened in 2002 after her husband Neil came on board in 1999.

The Marlow store now in Spittal street offers a variety of services including new, vintage and bespoke jewellery. You can take in your family heirlooms and have them re-worked into a new masterpiece and they offer a full range of services including repairs, resizing and expert advice to boot.

Their colourful blooms are a welcoming approach as you enter Liston Court from the High Street.

An amazing triumph as life started for Anthony Jackson opening his first store in Farnham Common in 1982.

In 1986, Anthony relocated to Windsor opening a workshop too, dealing with repairs and re-sizing and it remains a key part of the business today.

Fast-forward forty years and there's now another three boutique jewellery stores in Maidenhead, Henley-on-Thames and of course, Marlow. They're now run by Anthony's sons George and Joe, a true family affair.

Marlow really is a melting pot of amazing places to dine and the Oarsman is a must.

Duo Nigel Sutcliffe and James Mclean bring a vast array of experience with them to this contemporary bistropub and wine bar. Nigel worked with Heston Blumenthal and the Fat Duck Group and was the managing director of The Crazy Bear Group. James started his career winning Young Chef of the Year and has worked with highly regarded restaurants including the Gara Rock down in Salcombe, the Lady Ottoline in Fitzrovia and the Fat Duck Group.

After opening in September 2021, they were awarded the Best Newcomer in 2023 by the Top 50 Gastropubs, high praise indeed.

Henry and Kaye Laithwaite began life planting vines back in 2010. Today it's a thriving 6.5 hectare vineyard perched on the end of a Thames gravel terrace.

Of course, you know the wine is going to be amazing when the owner is part of the Laithwaite's family dynasty. Henry’s father, Tony, is founder of wine retailer, Laithwaite’s, and mother, Barbara, is winemaker at Wyfold, near Henley-on-Thames.

Harrow & Hope offers a range of sparkling wines made exclusively using the Traditional Method as favoured by the top Champagne producers whereby wine undergoes a second fermentation process in the bottle.

They offer tours throughout the year too.

Ah yes, the card that everyone wants to be; the ace of spades.

The Shed is a private dining room from the Hand & Flowers, just down the road, and almost opposite the The Coach.

Only 10 guests sit at the 'Chef's table' and enjoy the specially crafted menu come to life. Dishes are created in front of you and you can happily chat to the chef as he works away.

It's a real treat to celebrate a special occasion or event in a totally private space so find your 9 others and get booking.

As you'd expect, James Mulchrone always looks impeccable as he strides the streets of Marlow.

With over 25 years styling experience of the gentleman-folk of Marlow, Mr James offers "taste boxes" delivered to your door. You simply fill out a short form, then it's a chat in-person or over video call and he then conjures up a selection of clothes he thinks you'll like.

He also offers tailoring and alterations too, perfect for when you need that new suit.

These playing cards aren't just the best bits of Marlow, they're a history lesson too. Did you know that Marlow Bottom used to be known as Tin Town? Gold star if you did! 

After the First World War, the valley north of Marlow started to appear on Maps as "Marlow Bottom". Buildings started to pop up, made from low cost materials including wood and tin thus acquiring the nickname "Tin Town" due to all the metal roofs.

Amanda and David opened this wonderfully friendly café in 2020. It's always got a fine range of light bites, sweet treats and drinks on offer for those in need of refreshment.

You can eat in or takeaway too.

Formerly a garden dating back to 1758, this Green Flag park, has been a public park since 1926. It's a wonderful outdoor space and fine way to spend the day whatever your age. There's a large children's playground and a skate park which is open all year. The Thames Path passes through the park as it borders the banks of the Thames.

You'll notice the statue to Sir Steve Redgrave, the five gold medal winning Olympic rowing hero as well as many fine trees and large expanses of lawn with beautifully manicured flowerbeds and a brick-in-grass maze, created by Adrian Fisher to mark the Millennium. It offers indoor and outdoor catering, as well as public toilets too.

The house and its immediate grounds were purchased by public subscription in 1926, with the grounds becoming a public park called Higginson Park, dedicated to General Sir George Higginson. He was a veteran of the Crimean War and native of Marlow, and he celebrated his 100th birthday in June 1926.

It's been around since 1927 so a fair old while. It began life as a swimming area before the Scouts bought is in 1947 and introduced boating too. Today it offers kayaking, rafting, canoeing, dragon and bell boating as water activities. They have a climbing wall on dry land as well as aeroball and crate stacking. If you know, you know.

The Marlow Bridge dominates the landscape as you enter the town from Bisham. If you enter via car, the bollards are anxiety-inducing for even the smallest of cars but the town is worth the worry. 

You can also walk across the bridge and we challenge anyone not to stop and take at least one photo of the splendid view of the River Thames.

There has been a bridge on the site since the reign of King Edward III which was stated in around 1530. The current suspension bridge was designed by William Tierney Clark and was built between 1829 and 1832, replacing a wooden bridge further downstream which collapsed in 1828.

Get here early at the weekend as a queue will form quickly as folk wait for tables at this popular South African-inspired eatery. They don't take bookings either but if you do end up queuing, it's definitely worth the wait.

They're ideal for all things breakfast / brunch / lunch related and if you're feeling the need for glass of fizz, they serve alcohol as well as a fine range of smoothies, juices and hot drinks.

They have six other sites nearby too and if you're in for breakfast, the Full Mediterranean is a must.

Beginning life as a 16th Century coaching inn, the original beams can still be seen today in this stylish public house that still offers food, drinks and a bed for the night to any weary traveller, though with more mod-cons like a Nespresso machine in your room.

It's also home to the Churchill Tap (to the left as you look at the building) which offers a wide range of ales and is perfect or small parties or meetings.

This Brakspear pub has been part of the company since 1897 and well-worth dropping into for a drink and a bite to eat. Folk love to sit outside whatever the weather, and watch the Marlow-world go by.

That's no spelling mistake, they do indeed have three E's in Keeeps!

Very appropriately our queen of spades as it's run by Marlow royalty Tamra and her team. Spades seems to be the perfect suit for Keeeps if you think about digging for clay too.

They run a variety of pottery-making classes upstairs so take your seat at the pottery wheel. You can also organise your own pottery party too. Have fun and make yourself a memento to take away.

There's also a wide range of handmade kitchenware, vases and plant pots on the ground floor that ooze style and elegance if your creations don't quite turn out the way you'd hoped or you don't have time to make your own.

Does a place even exist if it doesn't have its own distillery making local gin?

The Station road distillery is located just behind the very grand Marlow Place in the heart of the town. Established in 2019, it's Matilda and Alice that do all the work; their copper stills!

They use carefully-sourced juniper to give a fantastic taste, with strong notes of pine. There's tones of citrus from the best quality lemongrass and fresh lime with liquorice to give a more viscous texture. Angelica provides a long lasting flavour; while hops grown in the UK add a spicy, honey and earthy aroma.

All-in-all a great-tasting gin for the perfect G&T when in Marlow. Cheers to that!

The Coach opened in 2014 and so celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2024. It's one of those places that feels like it's always been there. Warm and cosy with a relaxed pub feel about it.

It's not a big space but the bar is best if you like being part of the action or choose a table for a more quiet and secluded experience. The menu consists of small plates with a contemporary twist you'd expect from the world-famous Mr K.

You can chance your hand and turn up for a table or bookings are now taken for the same day so get up early! The Coach is easily one of the best restaurants in Marlow so a very deserving ace.

Hewetts is a fine example of an independent clothes shop for the well-dressed man about town.

Now in its third generation, the family-owned business celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2024 which is no small achievement in this day and age!

You're always guaranteed a warm welcome and plenty of high-quality brands at a reasonable price. They stock a full range of wardrobe items including shirts, jackets, trousers, footwear and socks. Any gent will struggle not to leave with something when you call in.

When you walk into Laurents it makes you wish all grocery shopping was like this. There's always a beautifully curated range on offer to stock up any kitchen. It's one of those places that makes you genuinely excited about food.

It's a relative newcomer to Marlow High Street, only opening in March 2022 and their first store outside of London.

Everything feels so considered and whilst there's plenty of ingredients for those who want to whip up a culinary creation, there's also a broad range of takeaway items for more instant gratification.

Those new to Marlow might not know that Mary Shelley resided in the town and penned most of her famous novel Frankenstein here. Mary moved to Marlow from Bath in 1817 when she was 20 with her husband Percy and her house on West Street remains today. Now called Shelley Cottage and was one large house when Mary lived there, it's now four separate dwellings.

Book onto this highly entertaining walking tour to find out more Mary and the creepy goings-on of this riverside town.

Those with a keen eye may even notice "Mary" is in fact Nicola Metcalfe, the brilliantly talented illustrator of these very playing cards. Keep an eye out as you're bound to spot more of Nicola's work in many of the retailers including Marlow Library.

Once you've been to an Everyman cinema you'll never want to go to any other cinema again. They are so beautifully designed and not your average cinema chair either with sofas and comfy armchairs.

The Marlow Everyman opened in Autumn 2023 after much excitement that the town was gaining such a prestigious cinema (and not a Wetherspoons) and has transformed the building that was originally Marlow's Town Hall many moons ago.

There's usually broadcasting from the events that go on in the town throughout the year too. A true treasure of the town with it's finger firmly on Marlow's pulse.

A very worthy queen of Marlow, Scamp & Dude is ideal for those who are fashion-conscious and have an ethical conscience to boot.

Founded by Jo Tutchener-Sharp in 2016 primarily as a children's clothes store, there's now an enchanting range of women's clothes too. Their unique style means you instantly know an S&D dress from 50 yards! Best described as everyday glamour, the clothes offer effortless style with mood-boosting colours and vibrant prints.

They like to spread a little joy to those who need it. Their  #SuperScarfMission aims to donate 60,000 scarfs to women starting chemo treatment across the UK. 

Celebrating 3 decades of brewing in 2023, everyone in Marlow loves drinking Rebellion beer. It's a darn-fine drop for sure.

You'll see it across plenty of bars in and around the town on draught and in bottles so you've plenty of opportunity to try it.

It's worth a visit to their quirky Tap Yard in Marlow Bottom for a pint straight from the source. There are legendary monthly social events too so keep an eye on their website and socials for the latest goings-on.
